CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio -- The head of the Pickaway County Dog Shelter is out of a job after county commissioners fired her on Monday.
More than 50 supporters of Pickaway County Dog Warden Tammy Fee showed up to voice their anger and frustration at the Pickaway County Commissioners meeting on Monday.
Fee's allies chastised the commissioners for not providing a detailed explanation of the firing, while praising Fee for turning what they considered a troubled dog shelter into a credible operation.
"You can't get rid of that girl. You've made a big mistake because election time is coming," said one unidentified speaker.
Fee said she was blind-sided by the firing, adding that commissioners never notified her in writing that they were unhappy with her job performance.
"I challenged them on a couple of issues that promote positive pet ownership and they weren't receptive," Fee said.
Challenged by Fee's supporters to detail the reasons behind the firing, the commissioners cited legal limitations.
"We're not at liberty to talk about her personnel file," said commissioner Jay Wippel.
In a written statement the commissioners noted that fee's firing "was based on growing concerns and dissatisfaction with her management."
They cited ongoing deficiencies specifically in budgeting, staffing, and facilities management, as well as relations with other public and private agencies.
Fee does not have any immediate career plans. She plans to campaign for the opponent of one commissioner up for re-election and may decide to run for office in the future.
