MARYSVILLE, Ohio -- A few weeks ago, NBC 4 reported that ten deputies with the Union County Sheriff's Office would be laid off this month. It was a tough pill to swallow for the deputies, their families and the community. The reason behind the move? Money.
The county is in a financial hole, and the layoffs save quite a bit in salary, but some in the community worry it could leave them open to crime.
This Saturday, a Union County woman is putting together a support rally for the ten deputies that will soon get pink slips.
Sarah Dingledine organized an event at the Union County Courthouse lawn starting at 10 a.m. until Noon.
The hope is to get people out to show the deputies just how much they mean to the community, and to hopefully show County Commissioners that there should be another way to save money.
Dingledine says, "This is show of support for the men who walk out the door, knowing they might not walk home at night. It's never too late never too late to change minds."
NBC 4 reached out to the County Commissioners in Union County Thursday, but the calls were not returned.
