UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- Spring Break starts Friday in the Upper Arlington School District and officials are using the time wisely to clean the entire building at Barrington Elementary.
District officials say they've had 37 lice cases in the past ten days, but parents say they were notified of the first case in late January.
Officials say all lockers and classrooms of affected students have already been cleaned.
The school nurse has been checking students in school and they urge parents to check their child's scalp and hair regularly.
Girls with long hair have been urged to wear pony tails and boys said they have noticed schoolmates getting buzz cuts.
Joey Scheinberg says he's not afraid, but his sister is.
"She would freak out every day. She would say, 'Dad check my hair. Mom check my hair.' She really was quite scared," he said.
Neither Joey nor his sister have lice but they know students who do. They've had to put plastic bags in their backpacks.
Joey's mom said the district notified parents right away thorugh email and hard copies sent home but questions remain.
"What do we do? What are we looking for? And what can I do at home to prevent?" said Beth Siracuse, a parent.
Nurses say if you think your child is affected to make sure you have regular shampoo without conditioner, towels, medicated rinse (available over the counter), a nit comb or tweezers, one small plastic bag and tie for nits/eggs and two large plastic bags and twist ties for clothing and dust. The rinse must be left on the child's hair for 10 minutes.
Nurses recommend all family members be treated and checked for ten days after treatment. If lice remain, another treatment is necessary.
Experts urge parents to "Never Share What Touches Hair." That includes hair brushes, combs and hats.
