Layoff notices went to the wrong police officers in Ohio, an error that Akron officials blame on a miscalculation of seniority points.
The city is sending letters to six officers informing them that the layoff notices they received in the last few days are being rescinded. But six other officers will be notified they're being laid off instead.
Akron communications director Mark Williamson said Tuesday that the city regrets the mistake and is trying to fix it promptly. He says some families will be relieved while others who thought they'd cleared a hurdle will learn that was not the case.
The city began the process of laying off a total of 40 officers on Friday.
