A local insurance agent is in custody, accused of theft.
John W. Elder, aka Bill Elder, a former insurance agent with Monumental Life Insurance was arrested Friday. He is facing charges of grand theft and receiving stolen property.
Elder, 61, of Bremen, is suspected of collecting insurance premiums from victims and diverting the money to his personal accounts.
He was the treasurer of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Bremen and is also suspected of embezzling several thousand dollars from the church.
The charges are punishable by up to 18 months in prison each and a maximum fine of $5,000 each.
Officials said additional charges may be forthcoming.
