MIAMI -- Nursing homes around the country are remaking themselves because of consumer demands and the economic realities of selling a service nearly no one wants.
In Florida, Miami Jewish Home and Hospital has added specialists in fields such as biofeedback and pain management in recent years to cater to patients of all ages. The company expects the moves to help it break even in 2011 after several years of losses.
At Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services, Nancy King oversees home and community programs. She says demand has roughly doubled in the past five years for services offered outside nursing homes, which now account for about one-fifth of revenues. Among them are transportation, meal delivery and home health care.
AARP long-term care expert Elinor Ginzler says facilities recognize that their old business model needs to change.
