A community outreach musical group, Carpe Diem String Quartet, has been together seven years. The former musical colleagues banded together to bring music into senior centers, schools, and even juvenile detention centers -- for free.
The opportunity to provide music for those who might otherwise miss out on classical music is offered by a group of acclaimed musicians, most who met while playing together in the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. The effort came out of personal experiences.
One of the group co-founders, Korinie Fujiwara, had a friend who was battling cancer and staying in an assisted living center. Although Korine has since moved to Tacoma, Washington, she still returns to join her colleagues to play in Central Ohio, as well as at other venues around the country.
