A Muskingum County barn was destroyed Wednesday night after being engulfed by fire.
The fire happened at Heresy Horses, a horse rescue that operated in New Concord.
Heresy Horses owner Julie Copper told NBC4 that she discovered the fire when her dog Bailey started barking.
Copper went to check on the dog and found the barn on fire.
Without Bailey alerting her to the fire, Copper said that she would not have been able to save the 5 horses that were housed in the barn at the time.
The barn is a total loss, according to Copper.
She calls the fire “absolutely horrendous” and said that in addition to the barn, her tractor, four wheeler, harness, lawnmowers, bicycles, tools, tack, saddles, bridles, and winter horse blankets were all destroyed in the fire.
A friend has offered to house the horses in a nearby barn, but that leaves Copper with a 15 minute drive to take care of them.
Copper gets her horses from “kill sales”, then spends about a month rehabilitating the animals before finding them a permanent home. She says that she has placed horses all around the country.
Copper said that officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
