FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Homer Bailey may be the Cincinnati Reds' most heralded pitching prospect in more than a decade, but he's running out of chances to prove that he belongs in the rotation instead of the minors.
He did all right today, giving up three hits, two walks and a run in four innings of a 4-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins that lowered his earned run average to 6.75.
It was much better than his last outing, when he gave up six runs and seven hits in only 3 1-3 innings against Boston.
The first-round draft pick has been inconsistent this spring, and he's fallen behind Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez in the competition to fill out the rotation.
Bailey says he won't be too disappointed if he's sent back to Triple-A Louisville. He says he'll just use the opportunity to work on his game.
