FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Jay Bruce, an outfielder considered the Cincinnati Reds' top prospect, was reassigned to their minor league camp on Thursday, leaving one less candidate for the job in center.
The Reds also optioned OF Drew T. Anderson and right-hander Marcus McBeth to Triple-A Louisville. Right-handers Josh Roenicke and Tom Shearn were reassigned to the minors.
The moves left the Reds with 44 players in camp, including injured left-hander Bobby Livingston and shortstop Alex Gonzalez, expected to miss the start of the season with a knee injury.
Bruce started spring training hoping to win the job in center, but the Reds are concerned about rushing the 20-year-old prospect too fast. He jumped from Single-A to Triple-A last season. Bruce batted .262 with no homers and three RBIs in spring training.
Manager Dusty Baker now has the choice of Corey Patterson, Norris Hopper or Ryan Freel in center field.
