CARSON, Calif. -- Eduardo Lillingston broke a tie early in the second half and Chivas USA held off a 10-man Columbus side as Chivas beat the Crew 2-1 on Sunday.
It is the first time Chivas has started 3-0 in the team's five-year history, while defending MLS Cup champion Columbus lost for the second time in four days.
Chivas opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Gerson Mayen slipped a ball to the top of the six-yard box, where Atiba Harris muscled his way past Crew defender Andy Iro and knocked the ball into the back of the net, past a helpless William Hesmer.
Iro atoned for his defensive error in the 37th minute by scoring his first goal of the season. From the left edge of the penalty area, Crew midfielder Emmanuel Ekpo centered the ball to front of the goal. Alejandro Moreno flicked the ball forward toward Iro, who slammed the ball into the back of the net.
Chivas regained the lead five minutes into the second half as Lillingston scored for the second consecutive match. Shavar Thomas knocked a header off the post, and Lillingston sent the rebound into the back of the net.
Despite his earlier goal, Iro made another costly play. In the 54th minute, the defender was ejected after a late tackle on Chivas' Carey Talley in the middle of the field.
The Crew, who lost at Real Salt Lake 4-1 on Thursday, fell to 0-2-2.
