STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti will miss the 2009 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a scrimmage Sunday.
Team doctor Wayne Sebastianelli says Mauti, who made 26 tackles as a true freshman in 2008 and was expected to compete for a starting job this fall, faces a nine-month recovery time.
The 6-foot-2, 231-pounder from Mandeville, La., is the third key defensive player the Nittany Lions have lost since the spring. Defensive end Pete Massaro suffered an ACL tear in April and defensive tackle Abe Koroma was suspended for the season for what coach Joe Paterno termed personal reasons last month.
