KENT, Ohio -- Kent State athletic director Laing Kennedy will retire in June, after his 16th season running the school's athletic program.
Kennedy said at a Monday news conference that he will retire on June 30, 2010. He is the longest-tenured AD in the Mid-American Conference. He also serves on the selection committee for the NCAA basketball tournament.
"This is something I have been considering for the past couple of years," the 69-year-old Kennedy said. "Due to the demands of the job, I have missed a lot and I owe it to myself, my wife and my family to do this while I still feel good and can share in wonderful experiences with them."
"One of the real joys of this position is rooting on our student-athletes. Now it is time to focus that time and energy on my own greatest athletes and the pride of my life right now - my grandchildren."
Under Kennedy, Kent State has improved its sports facilities and become one of the MAC's signature programs. The Golden Flashes have won 85 conference titles during Kennedy's tenure and the men's basketball team made it to the national quarterfinals in 2003.
Kent State has also produced three NFL Pro Bowlers: Antonio Gates, James Harrison and Joshua Cribbs.
The school said there will be a national search to find Kennedy's replacement.
