Tennessee, Cincinnati To Meet In Knoxville In 2011

»  Comments | Post a Comment

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Cincinnati will travel to Knoxville to face Tennessee in 2011 as part of a one-game deal.

The schools announced the Sept. 10, 2011 game on Wednesday.

Tennessee previously was scheduled to host Southern Mississippi that day, but the Golden Eagles asked to move the game to a future season. The teams will now play in 2017.

The move strengthens Cincinnati's schedule.

"We want to play national competition, and we want a balance in our schedule as well," Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said. "It makes our program better, and it's good for our conference. If you want to play for a national championship and not just talk about it, you have to step outside the league."

In 2010, Oklahoma will visit Cincinnati, and North Carolina State will play the Bearcats in 2011.

The Volunteers and Bearcats have met five times, all in Knoxville, and Tennessee leads the series 4-1.

Cincinnati played in the Orange Bowl last season after winning the Big East championship. The Bearcats are coached by Brian Kelly, who was rumored to have interviewed for the Vols coaching job last season.
