STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- No. 11 Penn State is headed to the Capital One Bowl against No. 13 LSU after getting bypassed for a lucrative BCS berth.
The New Year's Day game in Florida will be a marquee matchup between two of the game's better-known programs.
Still, Penn State (10-2) had hopes of snatching a big-money Bowl Championship Series at-large spot. Coach Joe Paterno and other athletic officials worked the phones, and the school also launched a video and e-mail campaign touting the team's popularity.
But the Orange Bowl selected Big Ten rival Iowa, shutting out Penn State. The Hawkeyes beat the Nittany Lions in September.
Ohio State is the other Big Ten team in the BCS, and no more than two teams from the same conference can play in the BCS.
