COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason has been named rookie of the year by the Sporting News.
Mason posted an NHL high 10 shutouts and ranked second with a 2.29 goals-against average as the Blue Jackets qualified for the first postseason appearance in franchise history. He beat out high-scoring forwards Bobby Ryan of Anaheim and Kris Versteeg of Chicago in voting conducted by 292 NHL players.
Mason, who is a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy given annually to the NHL's top rookie, was Columbus' third pick, 69th overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft.
