ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan has had losses in each of its last two wins.
Center David Molk broke a bone in his foot Saturday against Eastern Michigan. The Wolverines were already playing without right guard David Moosman who dislocated his shoulder in a win over Notre Dame.
Coach Rich Rodriguez said Molk was scheduled for surgery Monday and was expected to be out four to six weeks.
"So that's a tough blow," he said. "Not only does he play center, the leader of the line, but he is one of our best football players - period."
Rodriguez was impressed after finding out Molk played through the injury, which came in the first half.
"He actually played very, very well and played well in the second half," Rodriguez said. "That tells you how tough a guy he is."
Rodriguez plans to start Moosman in Molk's place Saturday when the 23rd-ranked Wolverines (3-0) host Indiana (3-0) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Running back Carlos Brown appeared taken back when he was told Molk would be out a while because he needed surgery.
"It's going to be hard," Brown said. "But have some other guys that will step up."
Brown said it helps that so many young linemen gained experience last season.
"They're a whole lot more confident," Brown said. "Last year was new for all of us. Last year was their first year starting. They've come a long way and are pretty confident together."
Rodriguez is encouraged by the way Moosman has bounced back well enough to play and with the return of offensive lineman Tim McAvoy, who hasn't played this season because of a knee injury.
The Wolverines, though, are far from Rodriguez's goal of having two or three players at every position who are ready to play.
"It's going to take us a couple years to really fix some of the issues we have as far as depth and experience and talent," Rodriguez said.
Starting safety Mike Williams and running back Brandon Minor both are listed as day to day with ankle injuries.
Rodriguez wishes the Wolverines were healthier, but they have already matched their win total from last season's miserable season.
"We're sitting here 3-0 and feeling pretty good and I hope the guys get a lot of confidence," Rodriguez said. "But trust me, we're still very much a work in progress. There's a whole lot of things we have to play better at and get better at."
