COLUMBUS, Ohio -- What's brewing today with the 2009 Ohio State Buckeyes ...

BUCKEYES BUZZ: Several bloggers and Tweeters have expressed their consternation that Ohio State fell two spots in the AP poll despite pounding Toledo 38-0 at a neutral site.

Perhaps the drop had little to do with the Buckeyes.

A year ago, Ohio State fell from No. 13 to No. 14 after Southern California - which had drilled the Buckeyes 35-3 - lost the following week against Oregon State.

Maybe the same dynamic was at work in the latest poll after USC's 16-13 loss Saturday at Washington following the Trojans' 18-15 win over Ohio State a week earlier.

STAFF HONOREES: Ohio State's coaching staff selected its weekly award winners for outstanding play against Toledo.

LB Ross Homan was the Buckeyes' defensive player of the week, with six tackles and a fumble recovery. Punter Ben Buchanan, who stepped in when Jon Thoma came down with the flu, was the player of the week on special units. Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher, with five catches for 126 yards and two scores, was the top offensive player.

Cited for their work on the scout team were WR Chris Fields, LB Jordan Whiting and WR Tony Harlamert.

The top player in the front seven was DL Cameron Heyward. Bryant Browning was OL of the week. No one was singled out to receive the Jack Tatum big hit of the week.

BIG NUMBERS: QB Juice Williams can break the Illinois career total offense record with 171 yards against the Buckeyes when the teams meet for a 3:30 kickoff on Saturday.

The Illini offense leads the Big Ten and ranks 16th in the nation in rushing yards per game (247.0) and ranks second in the conference in total offense (436.5).

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Williams, on what it's like playing at Ohio Stadium: "It's definitely top two or three, along with the Rose Bowl and Penn State. I can remember a lot of noise being there, a lot of emotion being there."

Of course, he led the Illini to a stunning 28-21 upset of then-No. 1-ranked Ohio State two years ago in Columbus.

BIG TEN HONORS: Here are the Big Ten's players of the week:

Michigan RB Carlos Brown had 187 yards on 13 carries and two TDs in a win over Eastern Michigan; Northwestern QB Mike Kafka hit his first 16 passes and ended up 35 of 42 for 390 yards and two TDs in a win over Syracuse; Penn State LB Sean Lee had 12 tackles in a victory against Temple; P Ryan Donahue averaged 51 yards on five punts in Iowa's win over Arizona; and Wisconsin LB Chris Borland (from Kettering Alter HS) blocked a punt and forced a fumble on another punt in a victory against Wofford.
