Temperatures on the new turf at the Harmon Family Football Park exceeded 100 degrees Tuesday morning.
The Buckeyes celebrated the start of full-contact practices in the harsh conditions with some heated battles already underway at some key positions.
Two freshman, OL Andrew Norwell and LB David Durham, got into a heated scuffle during the practice.
It was quickly broken up, but a sign to the Buckeyes that the season is officially here.
"It just becomes football ... intensity has to increase so we get after each other," said Senior CB Chimdi Chekwa.
But some Buckeyes, such as C Michael Brewster, hail from the deep South (Florida in Brewster's case) and don't buy into the idea of oppressive heat in Ohio.
"This feels like a humid winter day in Florida ... these guys have no idea!" said Brewster.
Among the key storylines from Tuesday:
--Nickelback Tyler Moeller took his first full speed hits in more than a-year-and-a-half. Moeller, who's expected to start for the Buckeyes, missed all of last season after suffering a head injury last summer.
"Today is a stepping stone toward being on that field and playing," Moeller said. "First hit, you get these stars, but I've been out for a year-and-half, so that first hit was a bit of a shock."
--Among the freshman who stood out in workouts: DT Jonathan Hankins is a monsterous guy and has already proven a handful for offensive linemen to move off the ball.
DBs Bradley Roby and Christian Bryant have both drawn high praise from teammates for being prepared to play from the start of camp.
And ironically, both Norwell and Durham, who were involved in that slight scrap Tuesday, have earned attention for their tenacity. RB Carlos Hyde may be a real option for the Buckeyes on 3rd down.
--LB Brian Rolle missed Tuesday morning's workout with class, and OT Marcus Hall also was not present. CB Devon Torrence missed the workout with a hamstring injury but was in full uniform.
--The Big Ten Network was at practice Tuesday taping a special on OSU's preseason preparations.
