Most high school football teams have had to wait 9 months to play high school football again. For the Westland Cougars, it's been a much longer wait.
There was no football at Westland last season because of the failed Southwestern City Schools Levy. But now, the Cougars are back, though the year off has hurt their numbers, After having around 70 players in 2008, the team is down to around 50 this season, testing their depth for sure. Most people aren't expecting much from the team in their return from a year off but the Cougars are motivated to prove their doubters wrong.
"I'm very happy to be playing. We didn't have a season last year and I'm very disappointed about that. I'm tired of losing and I want to win some games," said senior Exodus King. "A lot of people say we're no good and I want to prove all those people wrong."
"Sure we have nothing to lose and I'm glad to hear a kid like Exodus have a chip on his shoulder," said head coach Brian Smith. " We've been beaten up, even in the media, which high school kids should never have to go through and if they can use that as motivation, then that's great. We'll do that."
